Request for feedback: custom guide to using DTB

    Hi,

One of the things I've been trying to do with DTB is use it as a way to encourage others to stop file-sharing. I created the following guide to do just that:

    http://www.golegit.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/making-xvids-from-dvr-ms-files.pdf

Right now I'm looking for feedback on this document--did I get everything right? Are there things that would make it more useful? My hope is that this can be along the lines of an "Ditching Piracy with DTB for Dummies."

Any comments are appreciated. I'm a complete amateur, so apologies for any newbishness in the text. Thanks in advance,

    Himay

I'm confused re. the actual objective of your guide... that said, it's a nice walk-through.  one thing you may want to change is the need for duplicate profiles, you can use one profile to contain the entire process.  you might also want to note that there are two options for commercial removal, one (as you have) uses mencoder the other uses the action that cuts up dvr-ms files.  you'd probably only want to use the second option if you're having trouble getting the edl files to create properly, or you want to preserve AC3 audio (which requires a mpeg).

Thanks for the feedback! A couple quick questions:

     1) You mentioned that a single profile could be used. I struggled with getting that to work, and based on this thread, thought that two separate profiles were required. What am I doing wrong? What can I do to successfully merge them to a single profile?

     2) Re: objective of the guide... it's to hopefully help people who pirate XviD HDTV files understand that there is a very easy, not to mention legal, alternative. My notion is that if non-technical people could be shown how to do this themselves, that they could then enjoy the same quality and format of content without having to engage in piracy and the associated risks. The results from this process are indistinguishable (imho) from the quality of pirated material, and hopefully that, plus the ease of use, will help people out.

Thanks for the other feedback; I will be sure to incorporate into the next draft. Cheers!

This looks really good.  I do have a few comments.

     1) When doing a two pass encode, it is a little more complex than running the same profile twice.  Right now, we don't have any two pass profiles setup in the default Mencoder Profile.

    2) I had trouble getting ShowAnalyzer 9.1 working, however, babgvant tested it and said that the problem with the EDL file not being written correctly seems to be fixed in ShowAnalyzer 9.1.

    Great job!

Oh man, that's good news about SA 9.1. I'm itching to try it now!

Thank you for the feedback about multi-pass encodes as well--that'll be good for the next draft too. :)

    :) Thanks for reading!

ShowAnalyzer 9.1 did the trick...it can now successfully be used in the same DTB profile as mencoder. Woohoo!
