Remote Suggestions?

I need to replace my remote, the buttons are sticking and last night my son "modified" it in a way that required duct tape to fix.  As much as I like the 680, Logitech's support for the device is lacking; which makes getting another one somewhat painful .  The activity based design of the remote makes it very easy for others to use, getting to far away from it will make SAF suffer, so whatever I get will need to have a similar function.

The recent deals for the 880 are very tempting, but I'm curious what others are using.

UPDATE:

Ended up grabbing a Harmony One.   Thanks jakewill.

I use the 890 and have been pleased with it.  Its the same as the 880, with RF capability.  I would get the Harmony One if they had an RF version.  I'm not a huge fan of the smallish plastic buttons on the 890 and think the layout of the One is better.  But you get used to it.

What's your price range?  For <$200, Harmony is hard to beat.  If you don't mind rolling your sleeves up, the Universal Remotes has the <a href="www.universalremote.com/product_detail.php ($150).  If you're looking to break the bank, there's a thread at Sage that also mentions the higher-end remotes:

I have a RF20 by Universal Remote Control.  It works great for up 10 devices and also works via RF if you have the receiver.  You can get the remote for $40 plus shipping (thegreatguys.com) or with the receiver for $32.  I learned a while back not to spend too much on a remote with small children in the house.

Ideally I'd like to spend <$100 and it has to be easy to use.  I'm fine with knowing which inputs go where, but that's not going to cut it with the rest of the family.

In the $200-$250 range there's the Harmony One. The touchscreen is very customizable, and you can't beat the feel of the hard keys. Rechargeable battery is very convenient. Newegg has it for about $210, but  Best Buy had it for $200 even when I got it! What is it with B&M beating online lately?

In the $100 price range, there's the Harmony 550.

It's durable, simple and has the sound/picture buttons to switch in overlays. Also (and not a lot of sites mention this) the H550 (and the similar H360) seem to have much stronger IR output than other models. My Xbox 360 doesn't always see the One as well as it saw my H360. A downside to the cheaper models is that that the paint will start wear off the hard buttons and get pretty ugly after a couple of years.

I've used the 880 for over a year now. It still works fine, though the charing system is finicky sometimes. It does everything I need it to do.

I recommend either the 880 or Harmony One... Coincidentally I read a deals site

<a href>http://www.slickdeals.net</a> and they found the harmony 880 and the Harmony One on sale at Dell for $99 and $149 respectively.

Hope this helps!

thanks.  I hadn't considered the one because of it's price, but @158 it's a reasonable option.

I use several Harmony remotes. I just got a 550 on Amazon for 49.99. It usually runs $79.99 but dips down pretty regularly. It controls 15 remotes, the wife likes it and my 8 year old can operate without any problem.

It's a much slicker form factor than the peanut shapes of old. Both my other Logitech remotes has this format, the 659 and 688. I like the 550, my only complaint being the screen could be more legible. For the price, you can't do better.

The newer Harmony's don't have a media button. Certainly not the 880 or One that I use, but you can create a soft button on the screen for the green button.

It works just as well.

Having used both the 880 and the One, I'd recommend the One as it's a lot more comfortable in the hand and has much better battery life.

In saying that, the 880 is the second best remote I've ever used.

We use the 880 and I definitely would recommend it.

When our Harmony 680 broke about a year ago (one of my daughters "dropped" it one too many times), I replaced it with the 880.

The 880 is a nice step up, especially with the rechargeable batteries that never require changing and the good looking color LCD display.

I recently researched remote controls again for my father and mother.  In the end I got them the 880 too and they have been extremely pleased with it.

The one downside (that has already been mentioned) is the recharging base can be a little troublesome.  Sometimes you put the remote in the base with a flat battery and when you go to use it - it is still flat.

It isn't hard to wiggle it a bit to make sure it is charging, but you do need to look at the display and make sure.  If I was to guess I'd say 1 out of every 20 times it is placed in the charger, it does not charge.

If you missed it the Dell deal, Brent found the Harmony One for $180:

The one came yesterday, and it is SLICK!

Favorite feature has to be that the back light comes on when you pick it up; of course the touch screen and simple navigation b/w custom buttons is really nice too :)

Harmony 670.  Buttons are nicely placed and it comes in at a great price.  I highly recommend.  Does the "One" have buttons that run all together?
